There are many facets to building an adaptable software architecture. The one relationship that seems to hold true is that the more flexible a system is, the greater its complexity. The key objective for any software architecture, then, is to find ways which manage if not reduce complexity so that an ability to program for change remains undiminished. This gives rise to the notion of "innovating simplicity" - more flexibility and freedom, less complexity and inertia.

"Innovating simplicity" has a double meaning. Firstly, there is the implication that making the complex simple is in itself an act of inspiration and innovation. Secondly, there is the meaning that innovation is liberated by simplicity. Simplicity and innovation are mutually reinforcing.
